Dangerous to Dazzling

This couple was dissatisfied with many attributes of their kitchen, but when one fell and broke an arm on the stairs, it was definitely time to remodel. Upon interviewing the owners, Dondi Szombatfalvy, CKD, of Bella Domicile, Inc., uncovered even more dissatisfactions with the design, including the lack of storage and workspace near the appliances. They were also concerned about the dangers of the two wall-to-wall steps traversing the kitchen and living area that left the space disjointed.

Raising the living area floor eliminated the step dangers and unified the two spaces. This change also allowed for a larger island to be included, which supplied additional workspace, more storage, and informal seating for two. To further satisfy the owners’ request for added storage, Szombatfalvy added pullout spice cabinets on either side of the cooktop, pullout blind corner shelves, deep drawers below the cooktop for pots and pans, and rollout shelves wherever possible. A desk area was removed, which allowed for two tall pantries on either side of the refrigerator as well.

Adding a green element to the new kitchen, Szombatfalvy chose cabinetry made of beautiful bamboo, a highly sustainable material. From dangerous to dazzling with a good dose of eco-friendly features, the final design exceeded all expectations! Learn more about this designer at www.belladomicile.com.
