This opulent home rests atop a knoll in Beverly Hills and boasts stunning views of the California landscape below. Once the residence of screenstar Greta Garbo, time had since taken its toll. The home was in a dilapidated state when designer Nicole Sassaman discovered it and decided to completely redesign the dwelling.
Of the many challenges Sassaman encountered, the biggest in the kitchen was figuring out where to place the sink, which would be a key factor in determining the view. Though it would be nice to peer out the window when washing dishes, the view on the opposite side was pleasant, so Sassaman opted to leave the larger view unobstructed. This solution brought more light into the space, allowed access to the pool and presented a delightful area to host dinners overlooking the ocean and the city lights.
Also challenging was the cabinetry. Sassaman had ordered the upper cabinets with screen inserts, which worked in a smaller, darker kitchen, but were not conducive to this space. To remedy the issue, she inserted laminated Plexiglas behind the screen. In the end, this design detail is a favorite of the room’s decor. Learn more about this designer at www.nicolesassaman.com.
