This brand-new home in Oakland, California, had a traditional kitchen, which was unfitting of the homeowners’ style. In fact, the clients were so unhappy with the original design that they asked the builder to remove the original cabinetry before they moved in. Plus, this busy family of three wanted a kitchen that could be utilized by the whole family. The couple have a toddler-aged daughter, so they wanted some lower areas that she could reach easily.

Spencer Knight of Korts & Knight Kitchen Design dba Pedini of San Francisco was able to integrate a number of appliances and even cabinetry along the back wall, all while ensuring the space was aesthetically pleasing and flowed with style. The challenge involved ventilating the high-ceiling design, which Knight solved with aplomb by designing a soffit that extends out from the wall and then hanging the hood and lighting from it.
Glass lift-up doors at the sink provide separation without looking too disconnected from the rest of the design. Stainless steel elements, such as the floating peninsula and soffit, give a clean-lined look. The completed project reflects each of the homeowner’s desires and was the perfect fit for the family.
