PHOTOGRAPHER: MARY HENEBRY
This Northbrook, Illinois, family leads a very active lifestyle, regularly welcoming family and friends into their home for meals and entertainment. But their kitchen setup was not as accommodating. The dark space was actually split, with half the appliances and a few cabinets in one room and the rest of the appliances and many more cabinets in the adjoining room. To fuse the spaces into one large, bright kitchen, they called on Jack Slubowski of Homewood Kitchen and Bath.

To start, Slubowski knocked down the wall between the rooms. Then, because the home was not designed with 90-degree angled walls, extra care was taken in the cabinetry’s exact measurements, and a special cabinet was made to accommodate a vent that could not be moved.
To offset the darker flooring the homeowners chose to have installed, he used lighter cabinetry with a lot of illumination in the form of undercabinet, soffit, toe kick, and pendant lighting. The toe kick, in particular, is a perfect touch to accent the darker floor.
To allow for easy entertaining, Slubowski incorporated two warming drawers, two dishwashers, two sinks, a coffee maker, and a wine service cabinet. With their space now fused and functional, this family is ready to resume their fun! Learn more about this designer at www.homewoodkitchenandbath.com.
