PHOTOGRAPHER: HAWKS PHOTOGRAPHY
A family home handed down, this Tulsa, Oklahoma, ranch-style abode was built in the late 1950s by the present homeowner’s parents. Its low ceilings and smaller rooms were typical of houses built in the era following World War II, but they created a too cramped environment for modern living, particularly in the heart of the home. To open up the kitchen—both upwards and outwards—and make modern their long-loved home, the homeowners hired designer Ralph Lackner, CKD, CBD, president of Jay Rambo Company.

Lackner started by removing the common walls of three existing rooms and a porch, allowing the ceiling to be vaulted and giving the homeowners the spacious atmosphere they desired. Next, a tin ceiling that had been installed in a previous remodel of the breakfast room was taken down and reused in the doors of a custom hutch designed to fit into an old garage closet. Quarter-sawn white oak was selected for the Mission-style inset cabinetry used in the cooking, clean-up, and pantry areas of the newly updated kitchen. Then to create a focal point in the enlarged eatery, the knotty alder island was finished in a vintage red color and outfitted with a food prep sink and seating for two.
Retro no more, these homeowners are thrilled with their no-longer-cramped cookery. Learn more about this designer at www.jayrambo.com.
